Night Owls

31 Days of Holiday Memories!!

Day 24

It’s Christmas Eve today. It makes me think about all those years as a child wanting to stay up all night. Too excited to sleep…

Not much has changed. I stay up all night…just not out of excitement.

Remembering all those years of Christmas Eves, I really feel bad for parents. They have to get so creative about where they hide presents, how they create the Santa illusion, and when they put the Santa gifts out.

Kudos parents.

So Many Santas

Day 23

Every year, my mom would surface her collection of Santa Claus.

She used to buy one every few years, but recently has decided her collection is complete enough.

When I was a kid, I knew it was holiday time when I came home from school and saw the Santa Claus collection set up.

Here they are:

Dragon in a Wagon

31 Days of Holiday Memories!!

Day 22

Instead of Elf on the Shelf….

We use our stuffed dragon and hide them around the house. You may remember the Shame Dragon that lives in our bathroom. Here’s the post.

Anybut, apparently we’ve decided to participate in Elf on the Shelf a little differently. It’s not so much our dragon is getting into mischief…we just hide them around the house. When you find them, it’s your turn to hide them.

It’s just for fun.

Be Kind

31 Days of Holiday Memories

Day 19

I worked at Mouseland twice. From 2008-2009 and from 2011-2013ish…I don’t remember the EXACT years…because towards the end was when I hit major depression…I lost a couple years there.

ANYBUT!! This is not about that.

I worked at a theme park that was open 365 days a year. During the holiday season, I worked 40+ hour shifts (occasionally overtime, ocassionally ten days in a row).

I had no family who lived in the state.

I only ever got time off approved once for a week.

Sometimes I had an 8 hour turnaround. Which, for me, meant 2 hours to get to work (including cast shuttle time), 2 hours to get home from work (again including cast shuttle time), and 4 hours to sleep (if I immediately went to bed).

Cast members do not get holiday pay. Cast members do not get bonuses.

The point of this post is:

BE KIND TO THOSE WORKING THE HOLIDAYS.

Not just Mouseland. Not just theme park workers. ALL workers.

So many businesses DO NOT close on holidays. They may close early…rarely, but there are people who are working these holidays so the CEOs and CFOs and those who are not on the ground can have their holiday bonuses, their holiday time off, and so on.

BE KIND.

You may not know the person you’re screaming at, saying they’ve ruined your holiday…………won’t get to see their family. Won’t get to celebrate the same way you are. May be too exhausted to even wrap presents for their children (if they had time to buy them in the first place!).

BE KIND.

Everyone can be stressed this time of year. But that doesdn’t give ANYONE the right to treat those who’ve given up their holidays (MANY NOT BY CHOICE!!!! THEY DID NOT CHOOSE TO BE SCHEDULED!!!) so that you can buy that last minute gift, so your family has a magical experience, or so you can go to businesses on the holiday even though no one should be working or going out on holidays.

BE KIND.

We Will Remember Them

31 Days of Holiday Memories!!

Day 16

We had a tradition in my family.

Thanksgiving, my mom’s mother (Grandmother we called her) would come over. Christmas, my dad’s mother (Gram we called her) would come over.

Grandmother passed away back in 2001. Gram passed away in 2010.

Since they both passed away, neither holiday ever truly felt the same. But we always remember them and the happiness they brought to our family during those holidays.

Random Food Update

I am currently obsessed with pudding…

It’s become a problem.

Chocolate and vanilla….not even the swirl, just the two flavors on their own.

It always reminds me of the Rugrats episode where Angelica is staying with Tommy’s family and has a broken leg. You know the scene, where Stu questions his life as he makes pudding at 2 or 3 in the morning.

I feel like Stu….except I didn’t make my own pudding.

This has been a random food update.
